Merry Arts Pub & Grille: A Depression-era joint with a cool and happy vibe

merry.JPGJohn Petkovic, The Plain DealerThe Merry Arts" Bar in Lakewood.

Merry Arts Pub & Grille

15607 Detroit Ave., Lakewood

216-226-4080

Happy Hour: Noon–7 p.m. daily

They drank, ate and stared at the TV. All of them, it seemed. It made me wonder what they would've been watching when this place first opened its doors. Uh, nothing; they were probably crying in their beers. Merry Arts, you see, was opened during the Great Depression, in 1932, by Art Carver. As the story goes, Art was so merry that his pals suggested Merry Art's.

These days, the joint is just called Merry Arts, but it still has a bit of Art's vibe going. Yes, sports on the tube is the star, but the crowd is jumpy. And a happy-hour vibe permeates the joint. Maybe because two can chow so cheap no matter what time it is. Let's meet for those tasty tacos on Monday or Thursday, OK?
