Adele Givens brings her raw-and-real standup act to Hilarities in Cleveland

adele-givens.JPGAdele Givens performs Thursday-Saturday at Hilarities in Cleveland.

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the host of the Laugh Track column, a man who is planning for a wardrobe malfunction during halftime of the Super Bowl . . . Mike McIntyre.

Thank you, Cleveland. I plan to compensate for the pain of seeing the Steelers in the Super Bowl by consuming mass quantities of Super Bowl food and drinking lots of Super Bowl beverages. I've got duct tape on hand to hold up my pants should I pop a button again. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Any Givens Sunday:

Adele Givens is raw and real. She say's it's all about attitude. Take the woman in the Jenny Craig commercial:

"She's talking about, 'I woke up one morning and my daughter said, 'Mommy, you're fat.' So I knew I had to so something. I picked up that phone and I called Jenny Craig. . . . I lost 15 pounds and now I feel great.'"

Givens would have played it a bit differently.

"Had that been me on that commercial, it would have gone the same way with a different attitude. 'I woke up one morning and my daughter said, "Mommy, you're fat." And I knew I had to do something. So I picked up the phone and I knocked that little [expletive] down. I whupped her that day, told her, "'You the reason why mamma's so fat . . . carrying your little bald-head ass around for nine months." I beat her so long I lost 15 pounds and now I feel great!'"

Adele Givens performs at 8 p.m. Thursday ($23), 7:30 and 10:15 p.m. Friday ($23) and Saturday ($25) at Hilarities, inside Pickwick & Frolic Restaurant, 2035 East Fourth St., Cleveland. Call 216-736-4242.

Love of laughter:

Faizon Love is one of those guys who can make you laugh just with a smile or sly look on his face. He stole the scenery as the Christmas shop manager in "Elf" as much with his body language as his lines.

He's been busy with stand-up, movies and roles on TV shows such as "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

Catch his act in Cleveland -- cameras will be there, too -- at 8 p.m. Thursday ($20), 8 and 10:15 p.m. Friday ($20) and Saturday ($22) at the Improv inside the Powerhouse, 2000 Sycamore St. on the west bank of Cleveland's Flats. Call 216-696-4677.

New club takes bow-wow: The Big Dog Theater is set to have its grand opening Feb. 19 with local comedians Jeff Blanchard and Quinn Patterson headlining. The Big Dog takes over the former Centrum Theater at 2781 Euclid Heights Blvd. in Cleveland Heights. Improv impresario Don Mitri created the Big Dog to spotlight all things funny with improv, sketch and standup as well as comedy training sessions. We'll give you more details in a future column.

For information on opening night or the upcoming schedule, call 216-476-3636 or visit bigdogtheater.com.
